About Us

The Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) went into operation in 1985. ASTI remained the sole establishment of the University Centre until 1993 when by decree N° 92/074 of 13 April 1992 it was transformed into a full fledged University. From its inception, the school has remained the lone government Institution in Cameroon of national and international repute that trains professional translators and interpreters for the public and private sectors. Since its inception ASTI has admitted and trained professional translators and interpreters at the levels of Masters and Postgraduate diploma respectively. Today it offers training at the Bachelors, Masters and the PhD levels.

Over the years, the institution has gained prominence and repute through the quality of translators and interpreters it grooms. Its products are well baked and equipped with sound professional acumen. The quality services rendered by ASTI products in both public and private sectors in Cameroon and abroad point to the seriousness of its mission. Its comprehensive and astutely organized programs are taught by a team of competent and professional translators and interpreters in the country. No doubt, ASTI has, through the quality of its programs, and an experienced and assiduous staff, established a niche for itself amongst the best schools of translation and interpretation in the world. It is indeed a place for Cameroonians and non-Cameroonians who are interested in quality translation and interpretation. In order to meet up with current demands and to suit properly in the BMP system, ASTI has recently reviewed its syllabus.

It is expected that the reviewed syllabus, besides streamlining the quality of professionalization, will keep ASTI graduates abreast of challenges that are currently encountered in the field. Consequently, the reviewed syllabus takes into consideration the expectations in vogue and it is carefully designed to ensure that trained translators and interpreters respond positively to market demands. Furthermore, ASTI is in the process of making remarkable strides towards expanding possibilities for the training, both in face-to-face and distance modes, of more professionals in translation and interpretation, with the creation of new degree and certificate programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as the diversification of language combinations. Besides teaching and research, ASTI is conscious of its responsibility to be at the service of the community.

The school intends to intensify the organization of short courses and seminars for the training of translators and interpreters drawn from the public and private sectors. It is hoped that such efforts will curb the numerous translation and interpretation lapses and ensure sterling services from well-trained professionals. Again, short courses and seminars will provide forums for bungling translators and interpreters to improve on their skills.
