” Civilization could not exist until there was a written language because without written language no generation could bequeath to succeeding generations anything but its simpler findings”
_The Director
The Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) is home to internationally recognized research and teaching that focus on the analysis of culture. ASTI is also a center for cutting-edge language-related research and pedagogy, and for linguistic expertise. What our three divisions have in common is critical engagement with cultural representations and practices, past and present, national and international, and the need for the type of intercultural competence, multilingualism, and international expertise that ASTI provides to hundreds of students every year is growing exponentially.
Our School’s collaborative environment promotes world-class research, innovative teaching, opportunities for outreach and community service, and enhanced learning experiences.

ASTI promotes the dialogue with foreign languages and cultures through the publication of Translation Reviews, Annotated Books received, the teaching of Translation Workshops, and applying the paradigm of translation to the development of interdisciplinarity in the Arts and Humanities and the Arts and Technology.
Since 1985, ASTI at The University of Buea has received widespread national and international recognition for its role in enriching and promoting the study and practice of translation. ASTI has long been an advocate for the scholarly value of translation–especially as it relates to tenure and promotion. It is indeed a place for Cameroonians and non-Cameroonians who are interested in quality translation and interpretation scholarship.
From the study of bible translation to computational linguistics as well as audio visual media, ASTI is a center for intercultural competence. Our undergraduate and graduate students gain the skills in communication, critical analysis, and global expertise that serve them in a huge variety of careers, in the public and private sectors, as language service providers, teachers and researchers.
A cornerstone in the implementation of Cameroon government’s official bilingualism policy, ASTI has over the years distinguished itself as a major player in translation, interpretation, and terminology within the country, throughout the African continent, and beyond. The School’s activities comprise the following:
Over the years, the institution has gained prominence and repute through the quality of translators and interpreters it grooms. Its products are well baked and equipped with sound professional acumen. The quality services rendered by ASTI graduates, in both public and private sectors in Cameroon and abroad, point to the seriousness of its mission. Its comprehensive and astutely organized programs are taught by a team of competent and professional translators and interpreters in the country. No doubt, ASTI has, through the quality of its programs, and an experienced and assiduous staff, established a niche for itself amongst the best schools of translation and interpretation in the world. It is indeed a place for Cameroonians and foreigners who are interested in quality training in translation and interpretation.
