Welcome to PAUTRAIN!

PAUTRAIN (Translation, Interpretation and Intercultural Communication programs of the Pan African University ) is an extension of the Pan African Institute for Governance and Human and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS) hosted at the University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon, representing Central Africa. PAUGHSS is one of the five Institutes of the Pan-African University.

PAUTRAIN is hosted by the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI), a public higher education establishment created in 1985 by Decree of the President of the Republic of Cameroon.

The host institution is a renowned center of excellence in the field of translator and interpreter training, with around 900 graduates to date, all high level and reliable professionals working in around thirty countries around the world. ASTI is also a center for cutting-edge language-related research and pedagogy, and for linguistic expertise.

PROGRAMS

Master Cycle

Master of the Pan African University of Conference Interpretation (PMCI)

Duration of the program: 24 months (or four semesters).

Program objectives:

The Master of Conference Interpreting at Pan African University is a two-year program which aims at the following objectives:

  • Train professional interpreters for the African and international markets;
  • Promote mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and regional integration in the face of Africa’s multilingual and cultural diversity;
  • Promote research and innovation in oral translation and conference interpretation in the African and global context.
 
Purpose of the program:

At the end of the program, graduates should be able to:

  • Serve as top-level, innovative and enterprising professionals in the interpretation of content for Africa and the world;
  • Interpret content in relevant languages ​​for better oral communication between African peoples across the continent;
  • Conduct research and innovate in oral translation and conference interpretation for communication across the African continent.

Master of Translation of the Pan African University (PMAT)

Duration of the program: 24 months (or four semesters).

Program objectives:

The Master in Translation at Pan African University lasts two years and aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Train professional translators for the African and international markets;
  • Promote mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and regional integration in the face of the linguistic and cultural diversity of Africa;
  • Promote research and innovation in the translation of written languages ​​in the African and global context.
Purpose of the program:

At the end of the program, graduates should be able to:

  • Serve as high-level, innovative and enterprising professionals in the translation of content for Africa and the world;
  • Translate content into relevant languages ​​for better communication between African peoples across the continent;
  • Conduct research and innovate in written translation for communication across the African continent.

Master of Cross-Border Languages and Intercultural Communications, PanAfrican University

Duration of the program: 24 months ( four semesters).

Program objectives:

The Master in Cross-Border Languages ​​and Intercultural Communication at the Pan-African University is a two-year program with the objectives of:

  • Train high-level professionals open to interculturality in the use of endogenous cross-border languages ​​specific to Africa for quality social communication purposes across the continent;
  • Promote mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence and regional integration in the face of the linguistic and cultural diversity of Africa;
  • Promote research and innovation in the study, technology and use of specific cross-border languages ​​in the African context and beyond.
 Purpose of the program:

At the end of the program, graduates should be able to:

  • Serve as high-level, innovative and dynamic professionals in the study and use of Africa’s endogenous cross-border languages ​​as well as in the development of the technology required to achieve it.
  • Improve intercultural communication between Africans across the continent;
  • Promote research and creativity in the study, teaching, translation, interpretation, technology and use of cross-border languages, for communication across the African continent.

PROGRAMS

Doctorate Cycle

PhD in Interpretation

Duration of the program: 36 months.

Program objectives:

The Doctorate in Interpreting Studies is a three-year program (one year of coursework and two years of research) aimed at achieving the following objectives:

  • Strengthen research in interpretation through a particular emphasis on the realities of the African continent;
  • To generate greater interest and capacity building in the teaching and pedagogy of interpretation in Africa;
  • Improve expertise and decision-making in communication issues of languages ​​spoken in multilingual and multicultural environments with a particular focus on Africa.
 Purpose of the program:

At the end of the program graduates should be able to:

  • Leading research projects in studies of translation and interpretation of languages ​​spoken in Africa and other parts of the world;
  • Contribute significantly to the improvement of the situation of teaching staff in the training of interpreters as well as in the communication of spoken languages ​​and communication in sign language in a multilingual and multicultural Africa.
  • Conducting innovative research for the improvement of the practice and development of social communication through interpretation in Africa and beyond;
  • Write an original doctoral thesis in one of the relevant fields.

PhD in Translation Studies at PAUTRAIN

Duration of the program: 36 months.

Program objectives:

The Doctorate in Translation Studies is a three-year program (one year of coursework and two years of research) aimed at achieving the following objectives:

  • Encourage research in the field of the translation of written languages ​​with particular attention to the realities of the African continent;
  • Stimulate greater interest and strengthen the capacity of written translation education and pedagogy in Africa.
  • Strengthen expertise and decision-making on written communication issues in multilingual and multicultural contexts, with particular focus on Africa.
Purpose of the program:

Upon completion of the program, graduates should be able to:

  • Conduct research projects in written translation studies in Africa and other regions of the world;
  • Contribute significantly to improving the situation of teaching staff in the translator training program and in the field of written communication in the multilingual and multicultural context of Africa.
  • Conduct innovative research to improve the profession and enhance social communication through translation in Africa and other regions of the world;
  • Write an original doctoral thesis in one of the relevant fields.

Admission requirements for Master programs

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  1. Hold an Undergraduate Degree from a recognized university with at least upper second class division or its equivalent, in a relevant field
  2. Provide certified and true copies of certificates, transcripts
  3. Letters of recommendation from two (2) professors
  4. Provide passport-size color photos (2cmx2cm)
  5. No more than 30 years old for male applicants and 35 years old for female applicants.
  6. A cover letter and a detailed CV are mandatory for the application

Admission requirements for Doctorate programs

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  1. Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field from UPA or a recognized University.
  2. Provide certified and true copies of certificates, transcripts, national identity card and passport personal details page.
  3. A concept note on the research to be carried out in three (3) or four (4) pages (proposal of the topic, research questions, objectives, research issue etc.)
  4. Letters of recommendation of two (2) teachers
  5. Provide passport size color photos (2cmx2cm)
  6. Not over 35 for male applicants and 40 for female applicants.
  7. A motivation letter is required for the application
